You’ll not see nothing
Ever since cymast posted a video of Melanie’s “Candles in the Rain,” this somewhat similar song has been running through my head. So I decided to let it run out here.

Patrick McGoohan, RIP
Fans of 60s TV shows aimed at people who want to feel smart will join me in mourning the death of Patrick McGoohan, star of The Prisoner.

Unlikely Comic Book Characters
Some time ago, LeFalcon posted a picture of a comic book cover featuring supervillain “Paste Pot Pete.” Unfortunately this image is no longer available. Here’s another:
After the jump, some other, equally unlikely, comic book characters.

Spiderman opening
At noon on days when I was six, channel 44 from Chicago showed the Marvel Superhero cartoons from the sixties. These cartoons were shorts featuring in turn six of that company’s characters, Spiderman, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Submariner. The opening of the Spiderman cartoon gave me a thrill, a rush of tension in my upper arms and middle chest. When I saw it on youtube, I still got precisely the same thrill. It’s interesting how persistent a conditioned response can be! So here’s the stimulus.

The Nation, 24 November 2008
(image)
This issue is mostly topical and therefore unlikely to bring me back for a second look. I always enjoy Stuart Klawans’ movie reviews, so I’ll make note of his contributions here on A Christmas Tale and Synecdoche, New York. Catherine Deneuve is in A Christmas Tale, so I’ve included the image above (she doesn’t look like that anymore, but this is the most interesting photo of her I could find) (not counting nudes, of course.)

Dr Strangelove Dr Strangelove
Canadian artist Kristan Horton has imitated stills from DR STRANGELOVE using household objects. The project has resulted in a book, Dr Strangelove Dr Strangelove. The picture below is an example:

Plan59
If you haven’t looked at the site plan59, you should. It stocks galleries of advertising art from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, most of it very bright and colorful. Looking at it is very refreshing, like doing situps in the office. Only better, because you don’t have to worry about whether the floor is clean. Some representative selections below.
Street scenes like this one above are favorites.
Notice the deep horizon here.

The future that never was
The image above is included on a terrific blog devoted to ideas people used to have about what the future would be like. Thanks to I Eat Gravel for the link.
