Pattern recognition

Friend of the blog Armelle Europe has posted a couple of hilarious videos by Alfred Williams at her website, Ukulele and Languages.  If you like puns, you’ll like “I Can’t Think of Any Jokes“; if you like visual puns, you’ll like “Trinidad Looks Quite Like Wales.”  Some time ago, Armelle embedded a video of Alfred Williams performing “Love Machine” in Latin, which I include below.

    Thanks a lot for the mention of Ukulele & Languages, Acilius !
    Glad to see that you enjoyed Alfred’s videos as much as I did.
    I’ve been humming “I can’t think of any jokes” all day and got strange stares from my colleagues ;)Trying to explain the puns in French was just not possible and resulted in further confusion from their part!

    It’s rare that the same pun works in more than one language. If you are really going to try to translate that song, I wish you luck!

    This is very fitting for me, since I can never tell a joke. Even when I know a joke by heart, I mess up the punchline. I’m only accidentally funny. Except for the occasional funny joke.

    Acilius : I am not going to try to translate the song in French, it would be silly and the puns would be lost in translation. I was rather trying to explain what the expressions meant in English but that didn’t really help !
