Rockabilly Roustabout

I’m back in the office, doing actual work.  So I need ukulele in the background.  Here‘s a number from Al Wood, aka Woodshed of Ukulele Hunt.

“Amarillo”

Colin R. Tribe covers an old favorite.

Recently I posted about the Corktown Ukulele Jam, a Wednesday night event at the Dominion on Queen.  One of the performances I embedded there was by Alexis Alchorn.  I admit she could use a bit more training, both with her uke playing and her singing, but she really is an excellent songwriter and a pleasant stage presence, as you can see in this episode of Midnight Ukulele Disco from last year.  The episode runs about 26 minutes, I’ve had it on in the background as I’ve been working this morning.  Here’s a link to her myspace page.

Corktown Ukulele Jam

Here are some youtube videos from Toronto’s Corktown Ukulele Jam, held every Wednesday night at the Dominion on Queen.

An ad for the occasion; Rochelle Gagnon is the Oyster Queen; “A lot of people think this song is about sex, but it’s really about strawberries”; Eve Goldberg has found a “Cold Wind Blowing.”  (The Gordon Lightfoot fans among you will be especially impressed); Collette Savard and John Zytaruk, “I see you.”  Alexis Alchorn looks really young for her age- she remembers the “Dinosaurs.”  It’s a great song and she has the perfect voice to sing it.  As for her uke playing- well, she’s written a great song and she has the perfect voice to sing it.

Two ukuleleists

Here’s a pleasant little ukulele number, by a guy who posts on youtube under the name “teepeeok”:

And “The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” covered by Ariana Gillis.  She only plays her uke for part of it, but she has a nice voice and her band plays well.  Besides, I love the song:

Goodnight Moon, Good Morning Phonetics

Here we have the children’s book Goodnight Moon set to music.

And here we have it  in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Ukulele Loki and the Gadabout Orchestra’s “Prague”

Things I like include:

  • Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite
  • Klezmer-inflected clarinet playing
  • Antique slide projectors, including stereopticons
  • Surrealism
  • Nostalgic tributes to 60s psychedelia

All five of these can be found in this video.  There are also some pretty girls whose appearance could be described as “sexually available.”  I like them too.

La Crisi, by Fabio KoRyu Calabro

This week brings an especially good selection of youtube embeds on Ukulele Hunt.   I’ve had them on in the background as I’ve been working.  This one is especially well-suited to that purpose; a rousing tune, an intense performance, and lyrics that don’t distract me because they’re in Italian.

The UOGB (or a piece of it) plays “I’m Gonna Be”

I’ve been looking for this clip for quite a while now.  The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (well, four members of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and someone else) plays The Proclaimers‘ “I’m Gonna Be” on the BBC.

UPDATE: The “someone else” is Leisa Rea of “Adams & Rea.”

If Wikipedia were a guy, and he dated this girl, how would it turn out?

Thanks to the great Ukulele Hunt for featuring this video:
