Mrs Acilius and I have had this “Crankshaft” strip on the door inside our bathroom since 22 February 2008:
The missus is a sociologist with an interest in what happens among people when they label each other; she also has a mobility impairment. So this strip has both an intellectual and an emotional resonance for her.
Here’s today’s “Beetle Bailey”:
I read “Beetle Bailey” mainly because I keep trying to figure out what the Walkers would rather be doing than producing it. Here they tell us. This joke would make sense if the strip were about someone with a mobility impairment who has trouble finding usable restrooms and who has a service dog. Mrs Acilius meets that description. The Walkers should meet her, they could base a strip on her life.

/ October 17, 2009My in-laws recently remodeled their upstairs bathroom and mistakenly selected a handicapped toilet. It’s larger but doesn’t have arms. My MIL now jokes about how her feet don’t touch the floor while on the loo. I call the toilet “Mission Control.”
On a related note, I am guilty of frequently choosing the handicapped stall in a public restroom even though I’m not handicapped. They’re usually cleaner and always roomier.
Not sure how a handicapped person with a service dog would make sense in the second strip . .

/ October 17, 2009Never mind I get the joke now! I was replacing the dog with a handicapped person instead of adding a handicapped person . .

/ October 21, 2009Whenever I am joking around and talking about what I should do with my life,I often bring up the idea of traveling around the country and testing out the accessibility of restrooms. I could write a book about it and everything. You would be surprised just how much can go wrong in the construction of a restroom labeled “accessible.”

/ October 22, 2009Wow, what a great idea! I doubt any handicapped person has done that yet. You could be the first!
