Today I received a promotional email for a site where I read this:
Question: I am a Bucky-Badger graduate. I am considering having my high school junior son apply to UW Madison. Am I risking changing my Christian conservative son into a communist radical?
John Zmirak: The short answer is Yes.
In all fairness, I should point out that Zmirak goes on to give a longer answer, which is much more nuanced. And I should probably mention too that Zmirak has written some good stuff, like this book.

/ October 2, 2009Speaks volumes about self-proclaimed “conservatives.” They maintain that they support “traditional” values such as open discourse … then display this obsessive penchant for controlling all discourse.
Furthermore: If this kid can’t “handle” UW-Madison — not really a hotbed of anything more radical than high-quality cheese — on the grounds that the rather innocuous environment there will somehow devastate his fragile indoctrination … I’m just wondering what the fuck this kid believes in?
UW-MADISON ANTHRO PROF: Well, young Johnny, I’m afraid my field doesn’t recognize as valid the concept of “master race.”
The kid’s world is gonna get turned upside-down. I recommend The Sean Hannity Institute for the Propagation of Collective Psychosis on Planet Neptune. He’d be happier there.

/ October 2, 2009I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say that UW-Madison is “not really a hotbed of anything more radical than high-quality cheese.” Unless of course high-quality cheese is in truth extremely radical, which it may be.
