    Baby Jesus looks like a small, white worm in all the pictures, IMO. In the Holy Nativity Convent pic, baby Jesus is in the pupa stage.

    Yes, it’s weird. We’re so used to realistic pictures of children that it’s hard to imagine what visual artists had in mind in earlier periods of history.

    I think it had something to do with the belief that children were smaller, less experienced adults.
